Superstar Rajinikanth was at his oratorical best yet again. The ‘man of the masses’, whose popularity is comparable only with the huge patronage enjoyed by the late and legendary MGR (who is popular even now, almost 25 years after his demise), held his fans and the huge audience captivated by his short yet sweet speech made on the inaugural day of centenary celebrations of Indian cinema.
Attired in his trademark white shirt and a glittering dhoti, Rajini said “I thank the chief minister, for organizing a function of such grandeur. I’m also thankful to Kamal and my fans. I have always been a great fan of Kamal Haasan. We have starred together in 7-8 films; Kamal was as fluent as only he can be whereas I tried my best to match him. On this historic occasion, I also want to thank my mentor K. Balachander and the many producers, directors, distributors and theatre-owners who contributed in no small measure to my rise to the top in Tamil films.
“I’m also thankful to all those who respect and love me; their love and affection are the ‘alms’ I got through my 38-year long career in films. I know nothing besides acting whereas Kamal is an all-rounder who has shone in many spheres of film-making. KB Sir made me a comedian in Thillu Mullu while S.P. Muthuraman made me go sad in Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai. Mahendran brought out the actor in me through Mullum Malarum. Suresh Krishna’s Baashha took my stardom to dizzying heights while K.S. Ravi Kumar, who made films such as Muthu, Padaiyappa and Kochadaiiyaan and P. Vasu, who made Chandramukhi, are unforgettable film-makers in my life.
“It feels so lonely at the top but I console myself saying that this (being on top) had all along been my objective. I felt amazed by MGR’s Adimai Penn and Nadodi Mannan, Sivaji’s Thiruvilayadal and Saraswathi Sabatham, etc. I pay floral tributes to those who worked in such films and are now no more with us. Kamal is another legend amid us who has been in the film industry for 55 years now. Nobody can attempt (to act) in his films such as Apoorva Sagodharargal and Dasavatharam. Films are places where the producers are always at the receiving end.
“It’s a strange industry where people who are successful in life don’t court success; the vice-versa is also true. It’s a kind of a mayabazaar (fantasy world). My advice to today’s youngsters is to make them strong economically and continue to deliver films full of quality,” Rajini concluded.
