Actress-turned-dance choreographer Gayathri Raguram has expressed her dissent on the criteria followed by the organizers of the centenary celebrations of Indian cinema in honouring artistes. “My family has been in the film industry for the past 75 years; yet, no family member has been honoured. It is very unfair,” Gayathri has said. She starred in a few films in 2002-03 and then disappeared from the scene only to return as a choreographer in 2008.
Daughter of popular choreographer couple Raghuram and Girija, Gayathri has said that her family had literally lived in the film industry yet has been overlooked for the award. She has expressed her displeasure through remarks in her Twitter account. With a rich tradition in choreography in films, Gayathri’s parents were celebrated dancers and choreographers.
Her aunties, Kala and Brinda, are hugely popular as dance choreographers today. K. Subrahmanyam, Gayathri’s great-grandfather, was a famed director-producer in the pre-Independence era. Observers feel that Kala’s role as jury of a popular dance reality show owned by Kalaignar might have played the spoilsport in the family getting boycotted for the awards.
“I just can’t understand the meaning of these (centenary) celebrations….it appears very biased and many achievers have been boycotted/overlooked for awards. The hard-working fraternity has suffered the most. My family has been in the industry for the past 75 years and yet nobody appears to have ‘qualified’ for the awards. I’m not sure who is to be blamed,” Gayathri has penned her outbursts.
But the truth is dance choreographer Raghuram was very much invited to the function, and a award was also to be presented to him, but unfortunately he could not make it up to the function as he admitted in a hospital following illness.
