BANGALORE: For noted actor, producer and director Amol Palekar, this Diwali was indeed a sparkler - a scintillating cricket match and Diwali celebrations with old friends.
An ardent cricket buff he was in the city to watch the India-Australia
cricket match on Saturday, which proved to be a spectacle. The actor
speaks passionately about the game, which he says even made him stop his
shootings many times, despite the threat of getting chided for it by
his wife. "I cannot forget the experience of watching the matches with G R Vishwanath.
How can I forget the beautiful late cuts Gundappa Vishwanath played so
beautifully? I love the nuances of the game," he said. It's not just
one-dayers, he is excited about tests and even Ranji matches too. So,
obviously, he said that he was going for the second test match between
India and West Indies at Wakhede on November 14.
As he was in
the city, the versatile actor didn't miss the opportunity to meet and
celebrate the festival with his old friends, actors Anant Nag, Arundhati
Nag and actor-playwright Girish Karnad.
At a media interaction organized by the Bangalore Press Club and
Bangalore Reporters' Guild here on Monday, Palekar shared his
association with the city, its people and cinema. For him, the city was
like Britain with a great climate.
"It's chaotic now. I don't think people even know who their neighbors are," he said.
Palekar feels the audience of the 1970s was more open and hence
experimentation was possible. He said commercialization had grown
bigger, due to the change in the mindset of the people. He feels its
best for regional filmmakers to make their mark in a unique way than
compete with big budget commercial films.
To a question on
politics, he said he had maintained a safe distance from politics. He
refused to comment on singer Lata Mangeshkar's remarks on BJP Prime
Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. "But, as a responsible citizen, I
know my duties," he said.
