Anybody can be a parent. All you need is relatively functional reproductive anatomy and voila! What sort of parent is an entirely different story, which we'll save for another day. The fact that our planet is bursting at the seams is testament to the ease with which we humans propagate our race, intentionally or unintentionally - and intentionality is another book in itself, of course.
So, why do we have babies, then? Is it to satisfy a need for immortality? Is it the need to create a legacy? Tell any sleep deprived, befuddled parent with a newborn that, and they will turn on you the full power of their 'stare of death' which might burn you into the ground. Immortality? I'm unsure how caring for other human beings is a quest for immortality, when it involves raising them from helplessness and utter vulnerability to independence - which can be used to scorn one's own parents in an expression of that very independence. Then again, isn't everything we do a quest for immortality? The paid

Motherhood brought with it some hidden and unexpected baggage. Judgment. From others. But more lethal, self-judgment. I am not entirely sure why that was. Was it some hormones having their last run before bidding farewell to my exhausted postpartum being? Was it the excessive unsolicited advice from everyone? Was it the realisation that there
was much in the world to be feared now? Was it my complete unpreparedness in caring for someone so trusting, so fragile, so lovely? Probably a nice little cocktail of all these factors, but one evening, things literally fell into perspective.
I've heard babies insist on waking up and wanting to explore the world when their parents are hungry - no matter how strategically one might have planned one's day. That night was no different. My husband had a flight to catch later that night and we thought we'd have our last supper together, for a while to come. It would be a couple of weeks before I'd have the chance to annoy him in person about the number

Kelly Burke and Liam James. Photo courtesy of the Reproductive Science Center.Kelly Burke of Virginia is grateful to be a
new mom at 45. She gave birth to son Liam James nine months ago, but it’s not her age, these days, that’s the amazing part. What’s noteworthy here is that her baby was the result of a donated embryo—the second oldest cryopreserved human embryo in history, her doctors believe.
More on Shine: Egg Freezing: Can Women Really Have It All?“He’s my little miracle,” Burke, a single mom and research scientist with NASA, told Yahoo! Shine.
Even doctors at the
Reproductive Science Center of the San Francisco Bay Area, which oversaw the transfer of the donated embryos, were a bit amazed at the viability of the 19-year-old embryos.
More on Yahoo!: First-Time Moms Over 40“We trust the technology of embryo freezing, but we still wondered, after 19 years, how they would do,” Deborah Wachs, the reproductive endocrinologist who did Burke’s procedure, told Yahoo! Shine. “It was very exciting for us.” She added that women reading about Burke’s success should

The new issue's cover. Photo: TimeWhat does “having it all” mean? Not having kids, according to the latest sure-to-be-controversial issue of
Time magazine. It includes stories like “Do Children Bring Happiness—Or Misery?” and “I Just Don’t Want a Child,” noting that the American birth rate is lower than it’s ever been in recorded history.
The magazine’s cover sports a photo of a blissed-out couple sprawled on a white-sand beach, no tots in sight, under the words “The Childfree Life,” which is sure to touch some nerves.
At least that’s what it did right in the Yahoo! Shine office, where just the image alone brought out some strong and varied reactions—including between writer Sarah B. Weir and myself. So we decided to have an on-the-record conversation about it (in instant messenger, natch) for all to read and join.
Sarah B. Weir, Shine Senior Writer: Alright, they look like lazy yuppies to me.
Beth Greenfield, Shine Writer: Ha ha! They look like happy free spirits to me. I'm a bit envious.
SBW: The matching swimsuits reek

And...drumroll please...According to
E! Online, Beyoncé is preggers!
E! says that "multiple sources" have confirmed that Blue Ivy is going to have a little brother or sister. The Internet has been abuzz since only a few days ago, when the New York Post
assertedthat Bey was expecting, courtesy of their own "exclusive sources." Baby-watchers have been pointing to a
blue, sequined jumpsuit she recently wore on stage during her “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour" that emphasized her lower half.
Fanning the flames was an
interview Beyonce gave last Monday to Good Morning America, during which she said, “I would like more children. I think my daughter needs some company. I definitely love being a big sister...” adding, “at some point, when it’s supposed to happen.”
Suspicions were further deepened later that night when Beyonce wore a high-waisted black, strapless Givenchy gown that concealed her tummy to the Met Gala. Beyonce's reps could not be reached for comment.
Congrats, Bey and Jay!
