Riding on the success of ‘Raanjhanaa’, here’s Sonam Kapoor at her candid bestAs we are ushered into cosy and warm room in Anil Kapoor’s Juhu Bungalow, we see Sonam tapping away aggressively on her mobile phone. Dressed in an ornate Indian dress, the actress was all set to make an appearance for ‘
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ promotions. “I have a special appearance in the film but I wanted to work with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra,” she says. Riding on the success of her last film ‘Raanjhanaa’, Sonam is elated to get good response for her power-packed performance in the film. “The critics are loving me, finally,” she giggles as she sits for a quick chat with us.
Excerpts from the interview:It seems you have finally proved yourself with 'Raanjhanaa'?I think I could have acted better. When I started out with the film, I had no inkling that the film will be liked so much. All I knew was this character would make me grow as a person and I knew Anand Rai will make a really good film. I was supposed to do 'Tanu Weds Manu' but because of some date problems that didn’t materialize. The critics are being nice to me but honestly I think could have done much better. I have still not reached the potential that I should reach.
‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is obviously about its male protagonist. Why did you agree to become a part of it?The script is beautiful and after ‘Delhi 6’, I wanted to work with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra again. My role is very small role but an important one. Though it is not the meatiest, it gave me another opportunity to work with him and a chance to act with Farhan Akhtar who I am a huge fan of. He’s such an incredible director, actor and singer.
So you have no qualms in doing such a miniscule role? Not at all. The character that I am playing in ‘
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ is like a dream compared to Raanjhanaa’s Zoya, which was quite a difficult role. Though I had a great time shooting, it was emotionally very taxing.
Tell us about your role in the film.
She’s just a pure, pretty girl who Farhan’s character falls in love with and he wants to change because of this girl. I think it’s going to be an iconic film and I wanted to be a part of it.
So what kind of films excites the actor in you?If anything that makes me grow as an actor and as a person. I want people to remember my
characters. I look at characters, not scripts. If a character is amazing to portray, that excites me. Then comes the director, the script etc.
You have seen highs and lows in the few years you have been in the industry. What’s your learning curve?
I think I have a really long way to go. I don't think I have grown enough as an actor. I want to keep learning and become a better person and a better actor.
What are you reading right now?
I am re-reading Rohinton's Mistry's books. I am also reading Chitra Banerjee. I am reading 'Gone Girl'. I read two-three books at a time.
